Some have called Haida Gwaii Canada's Galapagos North - and it's easy to see why. Both are home to amazing wildlife and offer unique and spectacular natural environments. Both have a mystical appeal, but are difficult to reach. As an added bonus, Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) also features a fascinating indigenous culture, past and present.
Before we reach the Pacific shore, our group will spend a day traversing the Kitimat Ranges of the Coastal Mountains on VIA Rail's Skeena train from Prince George to Prince Rupert. This day-long journey highlights lakes, rivers and majestic mountain peaks before dropping down to the Pacific shore at Prince Rupert.
After a day exploring the Museum of Northern BC and the Northern Pacific Cannery Historic site, the next highlight is our day-long boat trip north to the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Sanctuary, home to more grizzly bears than anywhere in the world.
After four days on the mainland, the next adventure is a 7 hour ferry ride to Haida Gwaii. We'll stay in Daajing Giids, the largest community on Graham Island. The next two days will include time in the Haida Heritage Centre, a hike along the Spirit Lake Trail and a chance to see totem poles being created by Haida carvers.
For most guests, the crown jewel of this tour will be the four-day boat tour south to visit ancient Haida communities and explore the pristine wilderness found in this protected area. While this journey may test visitors stamina, it is truly a bucket-list experience.
